TIWAHE SCULPTURE
Light from within shines straight into the sky from 50+ stars that are cut into the dome of sculpture. There are four spots on the sculpture base where sage can be lit to azilya the land, anyone on site, and to carry prayers above. This work of art is the culmination of 8+ years of community centered design, including the wisdom of elders and innocence of children. We are proud of what we created together.

This was a collaboration between Dale Lamphere and the Remembering the Children Memorial team, spiritual leaders, elders, as well as area youth. This work of art is the culmination of 8+ years of community centered design, including the wisdom of elders and innocence of children. We share with pride that over two dozen elders and over 40 children worked on Tiwahe in the clay phase, their handprints are part of this sculpture and this story in perpetuity.
The creation of this sculpture also coincided with the first ever Remembering the Children Memorial Apprentice, Derek Santos, an Oglala Lakota sculptor from Pine Ridge, who is creating his own piece to be installed at the site at a later date.
