About Us

We are working to complete and expand the Remembering the Children Memorial, a site of public art, education, and healing on the grounds of the former Rapid City Indian Boarding School. As we finalize the completion of key Phase 1 components, as well as organizational capacity building, including staffing and operations, we are also working to transition to a standalone nonprofit that ensures the site remains a viable resource for public education, historic preservation, and healing. As Remembering the Children has been a fiscal sponsor of Black Hills Area Community Foundation and now has official 501c3 status the Executive Director is working to officially transfer and establish operations to continue community outreach and education as the site opens to the public.

Over the past three years, we, as the board of directors and the executive director, have worked closely with various stakeholders, including all three tribes, to bring both the physical site and the nonprofit organization that will operate and maintain the site to life. These collaborations, along with strong partnerships and open communication, ensured that each decision was made in the best interests of the project and our community. As the site nears completion, we are committed to establishing a sustainable framework ongoing maintenance, paving the way for our nonprofit's continued success and community impact. Together, we have laid a solid foundation for a future of possibility and healing.
